French Professor: Deities and Buddha Are Beside Us

TOKYO—Ms. Muriel Jolivet, a famous scholar and writer who specializes in Japanese-French comparative culture, said that she really enjoyed the program The Emperor Ushers in a Glorious Age and she felt deities and Buddha are just beside her after watching the Shen Yun Performing Arts performance at Tokyo's U-Port Hall on the evening of March 6. Ms. Jolivet is also a French professor associated with the Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia University. She was amazed by the highly coordinated and consistent body movements of the Shen Yun dancing artists.
Ms. Jolivet commented that the Shen Yun performance is very beautiful and abundantly colorful. The backdrop is superb and the timing is precise. She said the performance illustrates Chinese culture differently from what she knew, and the various dances of the show “bring us many things about China.”
Having lived in Japan for more than 30 years, Ms. Jolivet is a scholar who specializes in Japanese culture. She said she was deeply impressed by the program The Emperor Ushers in a Glorious Age. “This is not what we can see in Japanese culture. Although there are many monks in Japanese culture, yet we have never seen Buddha on the stage. This makes me feel deities and Buddha are very close to humans. It is truly amicable.”
Ms. Jolivet, who has never seen traditional Chinese dance before, said she liked the jumps, turns, flips, and the aerial techniques very much. She said in a ballet ensemble there is usually only one dancer who can act out difficult movements, but every performer in Shen Yun Performing Arts can do it. She added that people would be amazed if a dancer in an ensemble could act out the difficult movements, but in Shen Yun all dancing artists can do it. She also pointed out that Shen Yun performers’ body movements are very uniform and the coordination is just outstanding. Shen Yun performers dance so well as if they have a mirror in front of them. “The results are absolutely perfect,” Ms. Jolivet said.
